Cities Under Fire: Climate Disinformation, Extreme Weather, and Urban Resilience

As climate impacts intensify, disinformation is increasingly weaponised during extreme weather events (floods, heatwaves, droughts, and fires) precisely when cities must act quickly and credibly. False or misleading narratives can distort risk perception, undermine emergency responses, and weaken public support for long-term adaptation and mitigation investments.

This session anchors the information integrity challenge in urban climate impacts and science, drawing on emerging research and a forward look to the IPCC Special Report on Cities (expected in 2027). It explores how scientists and cities are working together to translate complex climate risks into trusted, actionable public communication—and what happens when that trust is undermined. It will draw on perspectives from global practitioners as well as African local and regional experts, bringing a special perspective on this topic. Finally, it will provide a clear link to to action/implementation at a local level eg. exploring effective ways cities can communicate climate projects and decisions.
