Athar: Youth Art and Storytelling for Inclusive and Climate-Responsive SDG Localization

Athar, an art and storytelling initiative developed in Jordan to engage young people in localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and advancing climate and sustainability awareness through creative expression.

The initiative invited youth aged 15–23 to interpret the six SDG transitions through artistic media, translating sustainability and climate challenges into accessible, locally grounded narratives. Selected artworks were evaluated by a panel of Jordanian artists and showcased through a public exhibition and award ceremony, creating space for dialogue between youth and civil society.

Athar complements efforts to strengthen local SDG monitoring systems and participatory governance in Jordan. By combining creative storytelling, youth engagement, and policy dialogue, the initiative demonstrates how artistic expression can support inclusive climate mitigation, strengthen civic participation, and inspire collective action for local challenges.

The session will highlight lessons learned on using creative approaches to engage youth in climate and sustainability agendas and explore how similar initiatives can be replicated in other cities.
