Inclusive, Gender-Responsive, and Climate-Resilient Urban Development: Experience from Chandragiri Municipality

The session will highlight an inclusive urban development initiative led by Chandragiri Municipality in partnership with UNOPS, Cities Alliance, and UN-Habitat, with funding from the European Union and Finland. The initiative presents a replicable model of inclusive, gender-responsive, and climate-resilient urban development in Nepal.

The session will showcase how a co-financing model (30% municipal and 70% partner funding) strengthened governance, policies, and participatory planning. With active participation of women, persons with disabilities, senior citizens, youth, and marginalized groups throughout design and planning, four inclusive public parks are being developed, guided by principles of universal accessibility, and safety.

Chandragiri’s experience demonstrates how participatory planning, community consultations, and co-design shape urban outcomes. Gender-responsive design and green infrastructure enhance safety, accessibility, environmental resilience, and social cohesion. Aligned with Innovate 4 Cities 2026, the initiative shows how municipalities can deliver inclusive, climate-conscious solutions with strong replication potential across Nepal and the Asia-Pacific.
